Gregorius' Notes: On the Weird OSR Fantasy Year 2019

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Gregorius’ Notes: On the Weird OSR Fantasy Year 2019

Gregorius’ Notes: On the Weird OSR Fantasy Year 2019 is a role playing game supplement written and published by Kai Pütz a.k.a Gregorius21778 for use with Lamentations of the Flame Princess. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 22-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $2.50 but was purchased at a reduced price thanks to a special discount. One page is the front cover, half a page the front matter, one the Table of Contents, half a page is ads and one the Open Game License. The PDF comes in two versions, one with a black and white background for easier printing.

The opening paragraphs explain that this is a collection of blog articles and gives an overview of the contents.

The Faith of The Loving Mother is a religion which starts with some background as to how the religion was replaced out by others. The tenants of the faith are given, along with a new class for it and a list of 20 quests.

Gregorius' Notes: On the Weird OSR Fantasy Year 2019The Merchants of the Black Galleys is based on those of H.P. Lovecraft and cover them in a European or other setting. It describes the merchants, the galleys and a number of items they may offer for sale.

Nine Magic Items has nine items, with extensive histories and game details.

The Three Bridge Tunnels is an example of a 30 minute dungeon, which has a hook, three empty rooms, two traps, two combat encounters, one NPC, one magic item and one weird item. A map is provided as well.

Lady of Locks and Keys is an entity that can be summoned. It has a number of powers related to locks and keys and may get to the point where it can no longer be summoned, at which point bad things can happen.

Ghouls is an alternative ghoul that lacks the paralysing touch seen in most D&D-derived games. Realm of the Ghouls describes the land the ghouls live in. Spells for the Realm of the Ghouls has three new ghoul-related spells. The Shepherd is a being that claims kinship with the ghouls, and is described with stats and several magic items.

Thoughts on Raggi’s Eldritch Cock is the author’s opinion on the possible next edition of LotFP rules included in that supplement.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough that these would have been useful. The Table of Contents covers the major sections and looks as if it’s intended to be hyperlinked, but neither the internal nor the external hyperlinks work. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a two-column format and a few minor errors were noticed. There are a number of stock black and white illustrations appropriate to the content. Presentation is okay.

There are, given this is a collection of articles, a variety of different resources in this supplement. The Three Bridge Tunnels can be used as an adventure location, for example, then there are new magic items, a new organisation, a dangerous entity to summon and a new interpretation of the ghouls. Gregorius’ Notes: On the Weird OSR Fantasy Year 2019 is a varied collection of interesting material and it can be found by clicking here.
