A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Gregorius’ Notes: On the Weird OSR Fantasy Year 2018

Gregorius’ Notes: On the Weird OSR Fantasy Year 2018 is a role playing game supplement written and published by Kai Pütz a.k.a Gregorius21778 for use with Lamentations of the Flame Princess. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available from DriveThruRPG as a 27-page PDF for $3 although it was purchased at a reduced price during a sale. One page is the front cover, half the front matter, one the Table of Contents, half a page is ads and one the Open Game License. The PDF comes in two versions; one with a colour background, the other with a black and white border.

The opening paragraphs explain that the contents are reproduced from the author’s blog.

Encounters in the City Streets is a d10 table of encounters to liven up a city visit.

Gregorius' Notes: On the Weird OSR Fantasy Year 2018Strange NPC Extras for a Village is a d12 table of peculiar, disturbing or annoying NPC encounters.

Happenings Inside of a Tavern or Inn is a d6 table (although stated to be d12) of encounters, this time for a tavern.

Encounters at a Rivergate has six different ways of using a map called The Dwarven Rivergate, each with different inhabitants, one being suggested as a link to Veins of the Earth.

A Map for an Inn is a two-story map for an inn complete with descriptions.

Magic Weapons inspired by Motörhead is six swords inspired by the lyrics from “I am the Blade”.

A Faceless Nightmaregiant is a new monster, a giant from the realms of nightmare.

Yet Another Blob is another ooze to annoy characters with.

IrKASHra, the Two-Headed Troll is a mutated troll.

A Demonic Blob is a blob that can be summoned, with details of the modified summon spell used.

The Wyrm of Hackendale is a sidequest for 4-5 1s6-2nd level characters in which they help find and destroy a monster that attacked a village, complete with a map of the cavern in which it originated.

The Sea of Fog and the Cliff in the Mist is described as an otherworldly adventure location. This is then utilised in Nightwork for Jonathan Tobs, an adventure in which the characters are hired to escort the titular person to the location so that they can recover something.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that they would have been useful. The Table of Contents is thorough, and hyperlinked, and there are a number of internal links. All the external links appear to point to the same location, though; possibly due to watermarking, which is known to cause problems. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a two-column format and there were a number of minor errors. There are a number of pieces of black and white stock art used, as well as a black and white map. Presentation is okay.

This is a varied assortment of material. It’s aimed at LotFP but, with varying degrees of ease, can be adapted to other systems; the encounters are the easiest, as these have few if any stats. Monsters and adventures are more difficult. With this being a collection of previously published material, it doesn’t have a coherent theme but it isn’t supposed to. The adventures are useful too, and the last is comparatively long. The adventures between them make the supplement worth picking up. Gregorius’ Notes: On the Weird OSR Fantasy Year 2018 is a grab-bag assortment of material and it can be found by clicking here.
