From the Forge: 13 Evil Spells is a role playing game supplement published by Rogue Genius Games for use with the Pathfinder Role Playing Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.
The supplement is available as a nine-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $2.49 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. One page is the front cover and two the Credits and Open Game License.
The opening paragraphs explain that the supplement is made by a number of new game designers (at the time) many of whom appeared in Pathfinder design contests. This is followed by a piece of fiction in which one of the spells is used.
The new spells follow, all of the evil subtype, but for a range of levels and casters.
Blood shackles causes the target’s blood to erupt from them, causing damage, then transforming into iron shackles that bind them.
Bonewrench causes the target’s skeleton to try to wrench itself out from their body; if they die, the caster gets an animated skeleton they control.
Consumption causes any diseases the target has to take effect immediately, even if they’ve successfully saved, or makes them more susceptible if uninfected. Not really a combat spell.
Corrupt energy results in the next the target uses positive energy, such as for healing, it turns negative. Again, not really a combat spell.
Corrupt haze results in a cloud of profane energy surrounding the caster.
Curse of worms results in abyssal worms crawling out of the target’s injuries.
Dark contract allows the caster to make a contract similar to those devils offer.
Exsanguination causes the target to lose blood, and it’s more dangerous than simply bleeding.
Heart-eater curse makes the target hunger for fresh meat.
Incite greed makes the target steal a single item.
Rumor makes malicious rumours about the Rumour subject more likely to be believed.
Steal thoughts takes the last minute of the target’s memory and transfers them to the caster.
Whispers of evil temporarily causes an alignment change.
From the Forge: 13 Evil Spells in Review
The PDF is bookmarked with all sections linked. Navigation is good. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are some stock colour illustrations. Presentation is okay.
The spells are created by a variety of designers, and they do vary quite a bit in presentation. Some are quite brief and some, such as steal thoughts, are truthfully not really evil. Others will work better outside of combat, such as consumption. Others, like bonewrench, are definitely combat spells and rather nasty at that. None of the spells are bad, but some are better than others. From the Forge: 13 Evil Spells can be found by clicking here.
