A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Four Horsemen Present: Abstraction Golems Expanded

Four Horsemen Present: Abstraction Golems Expanded by Stephen Rowe is a role playing game supplement published by Rogue Genius Games and The Four Horsemen for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 10-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $2.95 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a bundle. One page is the front cover, one the Credits and one the Open Game License.

Abstraction Mythic Template explains that abstraction golems were introduced in Monster Menagerie: Construct Companion, which included different types and the mythic template, which is reprinted in this. Abstraction golems are intangible constructs brought to life by taking the spirit of an inevitable and tying it to a golem body.

New Abstraction Templates has six new golem templates; Fate, Hatred, Knowledge, Life, Magic and War. Each golem template has abilities tied to the abstraction that they represent

Fate ones naturally influence luck, Hate golems are surrounded by rage and can focus it, Knowledge ones know things and can teach it to others, Life ones have an effect on plants and people, Magic golems have an affinity for magic and spells and War ones have combat-oriented abilities, especially larger scale combats.

Four Horsemen Present: Abstraction Golems Expanded in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with the different sections linked. Navigation is good. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are several pieces of custom colour artwork depicting some of the golems, as well as one that’s been reused. Presentation is good.

Fortunately, including the rules for creating abstraction golems from the Construct Companion means this supplement does stand on its own. The golems, and their concept, are somewhat different from normal golems; any golem can have a template added and it will significantly increase their power.
