Final Lap by Nicholas Ronvel is a role playing game supplement published by Gulix.
The supplement is available as a 23-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $3 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. A free version is also available. One page is the front cover and front matter. The PDF comes in English and French versions.
This is a Descended from the Queen storytelling game and is one that is in its entirety made into cards. The PDF can be printed out into double-sided cards, and is effectively impossible to play without doing this. There are nine cards to a page although some are filler or missing.
The first 25 cards are the Instructions. These explain the game step by step and are to be read in order. The two remaining pages are an ad and the Red Flag card. Players draw cards and answer the questions asked. They are drivers on a tour, following the undefeated Champion. The Champion is defined using the cards, as is the race. The Red Flag card can be used to avoid answering a question. A final cards deck is also created.
Next are 45 Question Cards, which have the questions that the players answer. Nine Setting Cards define the tracks. Seven Final Cards have one winning card and six for those that did not win the race, Finally, nine Champion Cards define the Champion.
Final Lap in Review
The PDF lacks bookmarks and, given that it isn’t supposed to be used as a PDF but printed out, this is fine. The text is written on cards, rather than following a column format, and appeared to be free of errors. The backs of the cards are decorated with what appears to be stock images. Presentation is okay.
This is definitely a card game and one that needs printing out. Some Descended from the Queen games use a standard deck of cards; this one does not. Even the instructions are not in a form that would be easy to read, and that would have been helpful, having them in an alternate form as well as in card form. More work has clearly gone into this game than others using the system, but the format is still the same. There are, however, slightly fewer questions than there would be from using a full deck, but there are other options that wouldn’t be seen in such. This game shows some of what can be done with Descended from the Queen games, though it could perhaps be larger. Final Lap can be found by clicking here.
