Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Xoti, the Usurper (PFRPG)

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Xoti, the Usurper (PFRPG)

Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Xoti, the Usurper (PFRPG) by Matt Banach and Justin Sluder is a role playing game supplement published by Rite Publishing for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result. This is a single NPC at three different CRs.

The supplement is available as a 13-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $2.95 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. One page is the front cover, one the front matter, one the Open Game License and one is an ad.

Xoti, the Usurper opens as usual for the series by describing the character, a larger-than-life public persona playboy and godling whose carousing hides a desire to return to his people and unseat their oppressive goddess and the actions that could make this possible. How Dreamburning affects Xoti, lore and using them in a campaign is next.

Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Xoti, the Usurper (PFRPG)The three different versions follow, arranged in the book from high to low CR.

The CR 6 version is the comparatively low power mahrog mighty godling 6.

The CR 12 version is the significantly more dangerous cunning mahrog mighty godling 12.

Finally, the CR 19 version is the cunning fascinating mahrog mighty godling 18.

Each of the three versions comes with three different variants, using templates; resilient, war and fortune-blessed.

New Race details the mahrog, the chosen people of a mostly forgotten goddess. This also includes the preservation domain.

Simple Templates has the details for cunning, fascinating, resilient, war and fortune-blessed creatures. Feats has one, divinity related. Traits has some new traits elated to Dreaming. Lastly, Magic Items has Xoti’s equipment.

Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Xoti, the Usurper (PFRPG) in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with major and some minor sections linked. Navigation is decent. The text maintains a two-column black and white format and appeared to be mostly free of errors. There are three black and white images; bar the cover illustration, these appear to be stock. Presentation is decent.

Xoti could be ally or foe, though he makes a sometimes-unreliable ally, as befits a being that may become a war god at some point, and definitely makes a dangerous foe. The lowest CR version may be comparatively unimpressive but the highest CR is definitely not. Despite being a forceful and seemingly open being, Xoti is more subtle than might be expected. Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Xoti, the Usurper (PFRPG) details another interesting NPC in the series and can be found by clicking here.
