Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Nix Ra Bael, Dreamkiller (PFRPG)

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Nix Ra Bael, Dreamkiller (PFRPG)

Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Nix Ra Bael, Dreamkiller (PFRPG) by Matt Banach and Justin Sluder is a role playing game supplement published by Rite Publishing for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result. This is a single NPC at three different CRs.

The supplement is available as a 12-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $2.95 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. One page is the front cover, one the front matter, one the Open Game License and two are ads.

Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Nix Ra Bael, Dreamkiller (PFRPG)Nix Ra Bael, Dreamkiller gives some introductory material on the NPC, an albino drow elf who now works as a nihilist assassin. Details are given on Dreamburning, their own rather depressing theatre where a play, “Awaiting the Yellow King”, is continually being rehearsed, lore and using them in game.

The three different versions follow, arranged in the book from high to low CR.

The CR 10 version is a drow noble gunslinger* (arbalester) 10.

The CR 15 version is a blind oracle drow noble gunslinger* (arbalester) 14.

The CR 21 version is a blind oracle siphon drow noble gunslinger* (arbalester) 17. The arbalester is a new gunslinger archetype that uses crossbows, not guns; useful if gunpowder isn’t wanted in a campaign. There are some new features for weapons, new weapons and some magic items.

The templates are blind oracle and siphon; siphons can turn enemy attacks against them.

Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Nix Ra Bael, Dreamkiller (PFRPG) in Review

The PDF is decently bookmarked, but some are pointed at the wrong locations. Navigation is not as good as it could be. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of error. Bar the cover image, there are what appear to be a couple of custom images and a couple of stock. Presentation is decent.

As an assassin, Nix Ra Bael doesn’t just kill their target; he then attempts to completely eradicate any trace of them, killing allies and family as well as destroying all records. As such, characters may encounter him not as a target but as an associate of a target, meaning they could be targeted by the assassin without having done anything to warrant his attention. Rather nasty. Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Nix Ra Bael, Dreamkiller (PFRPG) is an interesting NPC most likely encountered as a foe and can be found by clicking here.
