Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Khufusiris, the Crooked Sleuth of Unfathered Sin (PFRPG)

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Khufusiris, the Crooked Sleuth of Unfathered Sin (PFRPG)

Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Khufusiris, the Crooked Sleuth of Unfathered Sin (PFRPG) by Matt Banach and Steven D. Russell is a role playing game supplement published by Rite Publishing for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result. This is a single NPC at three different CRs.

The supplement is available as a 13-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $2.95 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. One page is the front cover, one the front matter, one the Open Game License and two are ads.

Khufusiris, the Crooked Sleuth of Unfathered Sin gives some introductory material on the NPC, a criosphinx who now works as the Tarnished Souk’s premier thief-taker and finder of items, though they are more dangerous and treacherous than they look. Also included are how Dreamburning affects Khufusiris, where they can be encountered, lore and using in game.

Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Khufusiris, the Crooked Sleuth of Unfathered Sin (PFRPG)The three different versions follow, arranged in the book from high to low CR.

The CR 9 version is an advanced primordial criosphinx.

The CR 13 version is an advanced primordial riven magic criosphinx.

The CR 17 version is an advanced betrayer primordial riven magic criosphinx. In this section are new feats, primarily monster and combat, a new magic item, a legacy item in the form of a tattoo that makes it really difficult to land a killing blow against the bearer, and some new spells, all illusion.

The new templates follow. Betrayer creature is an acquired template for a being that constantly and successfully betrays others. The primordial creature is filled with the power of the wild. The riven magic creature is resistant to magic.

Khufusiris, the Crooked Sleuth of Unfathered Sin (PFRPG) in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with major and minor sections linked. Navigation is good. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be mostly free of error. As well as the cover illustration, there are some other black and white illustrations. Presentation is decent.

Unlike every other entry in this series to date, this NPC lacks class levels and, properly speaking, any items. Their abilities come from their templates, feats and tattoo, and they combine to make Khufusiris a very dangerous creature in combat, hard to use magic against and hard to kill, and far more dangerous than they might appear to be. However, there does seem to be little justification for their actions; perhaps the answer is it’s simply in their nature, as the scorpion said. Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Khufusiris, the Crooked Sleuth of Unfathered Sin (PFRPG) is a potentially dangerous foe, and a potentially dangerous ally, and can be found by clicking here.
