Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Jubal D’tirn, The Fool’s Champion (PFRPG) by Matt Banach and Justin Sluder is a role playing game supplement published by Rite Publishing for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result. This is a single NPC at three different CRs.
The supplement is available as a 15-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $2.95 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. One page is the front cover, one the front matter, one the Open Game License and two pages are ads.
Jubal D’tirn, The Fool’s Champion starts with some background on this cloud giant-descended gladiator who, despite a recent success, fears he is a failure. He pursues a side trade as a taxidermist whilst seeking a place in a team who can win the Damnation Epoch. Dreamburning, lore and using Jubal are covered.
The three different versions follow, arranged in the book from high to low CR.
The CR 6 version is a jotun paragon 6/magus (primagus) 1.
The CR 12 version is a jotun paragon 6/magus (primagus) 6.
The CR 20 version is a combat clairvoyant jotun paragon 6/magus (primagus) 12.
Primagus is a new archetype for the magus class that has more in common with the sorcerer. This has a section of giving a primagus a sorcerer bloodline or an oracle mystery.
The jotun race and jotun paragon classes are covered in In the Company of Monsters, although it’s stated everything needed to run Jubal is included in the supplement. There are some new feats and magic items, one of which is a minor artefact that has a curse.
New templates are the combat clairvoyant creature, who can see the next move in a fight before it happens, the enraged creature that, well, gets angry, and the giant creature.
Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Jubal D’tirn, The Fool’s Champion (PFRPG) in Review
The PDF is bookmarked with major sections linked. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of error. As well as the cover illustration, there are some pieces of black and white stock art. Presentation is decent.
Jubal is one of the less complex NPCs in this series, and also one who might become a foe or ally, depending on what the characters are doing. Jubal is self-interested, but he still knows quite a lot and will share it if this benefits him. He’s also cursed, which overall makes him less fearsome in battle. Jubal is therefore an NPC with somewhat flexible use; he’s neither a definite friend nor a definite foe, but can be useful to characters.
