Disturbed Minds

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Disturbed Minds

Disturbed Minds by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with Cepheus Engine. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 29 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three pages are the front matter and three the Open Game License.

Disturbed MindsThe opening paragraphs explain that Zerinsy is a world with only one industry; hospitals for the criminally insane. The hospitals dot the world and anyone not in one will be assumed to be an escaped inmate. The characters are hired to recover a noble whose believes was committed as part of a coup.

Complications basically explains the hazards. Many of the patients are violently crazy; often because of their treatments. The staff are also often violently crazy, and many are also armed. Combat drones patrol the surface looking for escaped inmates.

The Frontiers of Space explains that the adventure is located in the Frontiers of Space setting.

Patrol Robots and Drones gives stats for those that can be found patrolling the surface.

The Grayson Asylum for the Criminally Insane details the asylum, patients, guards and doctors.

Conditions for Success are simple; get the noble out.

There is also a map of the planet and of the asylum.

Disturbed Minds in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough that these would have been useful. Navigation is poor. The text maintains a single column format and some minor errors were noticed. Bar the covers and maps, which don’t come in player-friendly versions, there are no maps. Presentation is adequate.

This is a pretty simple adventure in concept; travel to a planet, get into an asylum and recover a single patient. There are lots of hazards along the way, though. The idea of an entire habitable planet – and no mention is made of needing environmental gear – being devoted just to insane asylums dotted over its surface is rather odd to say the least, especially as the characters are only visiting one. Still, the adventure could easily be dropped somewhere more logical on another planet. Disturbed Minds is a bit of a strange adventure and it can be found by clicking here.
