Daylight

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Daylight

Daylight by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with Cepheus Engine. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 22 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three the front matter and three the Open Game License.

DaylightThe opening paragraphs explain that Durnab VII is a world just beyond the edges of the Sonora sector – the adventure is set in the Frontiers of Space – that is the furthest populated planet from its sun (despite only getting one hour of daylight every 33+ years, it supposedly has what sounds like a terran-like environment, which is implausible to say the least). A plant grows in that hour and the characters are asked to retrieve petals from three of them.

Patron has the details on the employer.

Complications are things that can go wrong or which the characters are not being told. Arriving at Durnab VII has start ship encounters prior to the daylight hour.

Pirates has pirate groups to encounter.

Yachts are the visiting wealthy.

Leaving Durnab VII are encounters on the departure, which can be even more dangerous.

Durnab VII has some details on the world.

Daylight explains how people change during that hour thanks to the plant.

The Rapture is what happens during the event.

Effects of Being on Durnab VII During the Daylight Hour explains that masks and breathing tanks are needed to stop characters from being affected.

Brightshade has some details on the plant.

The Locals has reactions during the daylight hour.

Roster of Locals has NPC stats.

Local Law Enforcement has police stats.

Other Interested Parties has stats for others after the plant.

Roster of Pirates has stats for pirates.

Leaving Durnab VII With Brightshade explains it will be confiscated at the starport if discovered.

Transporting a Banned Substance in the Sonora Sector explains that it will be similarly confiscated with potential fines at other starports.

Mission Completion Objectives are what’s needed to succeed.

Daylight in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a single column format and some minor errors were noticed. Bar the covers, there are no illustrations. Presentation is adequate.

As is common, there are too many NPC stats when just a handful of each would have sufficed. The GM should probably change some of the foundations of the adventure, for as stated the world should be an uninhabitable ice ball world. Both Pitch Black and The 100 handled such uncommon events much better, via conjunctions. Other than that, the adventure is fairly straightforward albeit dangerous, as the characters are visiting a world that sounds like its inspiration was The Purge.
