A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Cyberpunk Data Fortress Generator

Cyberpunk Data Fortress Generator by Gordon Garyx is a generic role playing game supplement published by Doppelgänger Publishing.

The supplement is available as a nine-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $1.49 but was purchased at a reduced price during a sale. One page is the front cover and one the front matter.

The Introduction explains that computer technology is universal in cyberpunk settings and a data fortress is a computer system. These systems have an architecture that must be navigated and this supplement contains tables for designing it.

1. The Purpose explains that the data fortress is rarely the entire adventure and its purpose must be determined, with questions to consider for creating one that is fun.

2. The Theme has a d20 table to determine what the data fortress looks like and another d20 table, though with six results, to determine the level of realism.

3. Data Fortress Architecture is a d20 table with 12 results, each being one or more “rooms” including secret rooms to create the fortress.

4. Bring Life by Creating a “Misc” has a d20 table of things to see or find.

5. Defenses and Files has a three result d20 table for defensive programs, files and hazards. then a d20 table of defensive programs, a d20 table of hazards and a d20 table of data findings.

Cyberpunk Data Fortress Generator in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, though short, has enough sections that these would have been useful. Navigation could be better. The text follows a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are no illustrations. Presentation is okay.

This is a generic supplement but it is quite possibly explicitly aimed at Cyberpunk 2.0.2.0. or Cyberpunk Red, data fortresses being a common theme in those. There are no game stats; the closest thing being some general suggestions for the defensive programs, with PER, SPE and STR given, together with some abilities where relevant. Certainly, this could be used for Cyberpunk, and by switching out the generic programs for Cyberpunk-specific ones, fairly easily.
