Curse of the Gumdrop Ooze - Revised & Expanded

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Curse of the Gumdrop Ooze – Revised & Expanded

Curse of the Gumdrop Ooze – Revised & Expanded by Tim Bannock and Matt Butler is a role playing game supplement published by Wizards of the Coast through the DMs Guild Community Content Program for use with Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. This is an adventure for 3-5 characters of levels 3-4.

The supplement is available as a 14-page PDF from DMs Guild for $1.95 although it was received for free due to a special offer. One page is the front cover, one page is about the authors and one ads for other supplements.

Curse of the Gumdrop Ooze - Revised & ExpandedThe first page has a Dyson Logos map of a tavern connected to an underground complex and explains that the monsters come from an upcoming supplement, The Hag’s Hexes. The characters come across a roadside tavern surrounded by several cottages and general features of the tavern are given.

Outside the tavern is a gumdrop ooze, which has also turned various people into undead cruls. The complex is inhabited by cruls and a mage who could prove to be an ally, even though they are evil. There is also an injured couatl. The characters need to defeat the creatures and the ooze.

Continuing the Adventure has two suggestions for further hooks. There is also a new wondrous item; children turned into candy.

Family-Friendly Fun! has some suggestions as to how to make the adventure may suitable for children; gumdrop oozes and candy critters may be suitable for children but, as run, the adventure is a little dark.

New Monsters has the Gumdrop Ooze, the Crul and the Candy Hag that created them, even though the hag is not encountered in the adventure.

Summary Stat Blocks has those for everything but the new monsters.

Curse of the Gumdrop Ooze – Revised & Expanded in Review

The PDF is very well bookmarked with major and minor sections linked. Navigation is very good for a short supplement. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of error. There are no illustrations bar the map and some back background. Presentation is okay.

The map, as included, is not as useful as it could be. It hasn’t been modified, which makes it neither GM nor player friendly as-is; there are no labels showing GMs which room is which and the secret doors have been left on.

The adventure itself is quite short; it’s essentially a single mini-dungeon. There is far more material on expanding the adventure, altering the adventure, further adventures, new monsters and stat blocks. This does mean that there is a comparative wealth of additional material. Curse of the Gumdrop Ooze – Revised & Expanded is a fairly decent little adventure and it can be found by clicking here.
