Crypt of Mahina

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Crypt of Mahina

Crypt of Mahina by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

Crypt of MahinaThe supplement is available as a 22 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. One page is the front cover, three the front matter and three the Open Game License.

Background gives some details on Mahina, once a paladin who turned to evil, killed his king and took his place. He was said to have been buried with his treasure and the sands of the desert have recently revealed what is believed to be Mahina’s crypt.

Dungeon Master Notes explains the adventure can be placed anywhere appropriate, and not just in a desert, and that it is written for 4-8 characters of levels 1-2. A random encounter table within the crypt is given, and when it should be rolled on.

DM Note gives the general details on the crypt’s rooms unless otherwise stated in descriptions.

Key to the Crypt of Mahina covers the crypt itself. There are various tricks, traps and monsters, including many undead, and the monster stats are included completely in the text.

The final page of content is a map of the crypt.

Crypt of Mahina in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that they would have been useful. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a two-column format and some minor errors were noticed. As well as the map, there are some stock black and white illustrations. Presentation is okay.

This is a straightforward enough old-style dungeon crawl for 5th Edition, with some old-fashioned elements that players unused to old-style gaming may be unfamiliar with, such as the oft-neglected wandering monsters. The puzzles are only to gain more treasure, and will not stop the adventure in its tracks. The characters will just enter, explore, fight the monsters, loot the place and leave.
