Crit Happens: Issue #4 Hex Crawl of Horror

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Crit Happens: Issue #4 Hex Crawl of Horror

Crit Happens: Issue #4 Hex Crawl of Horror is a generic role playing game supplement written and published by TableTop Tinker.

The supplement is available as a 27 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. One page is the front cover and one the Contents.

Flint’s Fury is a word from the author about how this combines hex crawls with horror.

Crit Happens: Issue #4 Hex Crawl of HorrorThe Hexing gives some background for the hex crawl and how a coven of witches pursued dangerous magic and caused a cataclysmic event called The Hexing which tore the land asunder.

Terror-tories explains that the fractured land is divided into five different Terror-tories, each controlled by a different faction; undead, monstrous creatures, Hell’s Wrath, the coven and the survivors.

Hexing Locations is a 2d6 table with 12 results of places; yes, there is a result 1 that will never be rolled without a modifier.

Hexing Encounters is another 2d6 table, this time for encounters, and again with 12 results.

Hexing Encounters Defined covers these in more detail.

What Is A Hex Crawl? explains what these are.

Hex Crawl Map has a partially populated map with 18 hexes.

What is a Hex Flower? explains what hex flowers are and how they are being used in this supplement.

Domination Matters explains what happens if a faction dominates a Hex Flower.

The next pages are taken up by an example of a Terror-tory power, party hex start for the same map, a Terror-tory worksheet, a location/force hex worksheet, blank locations and force listings and dominant power/force tokens.

Hex Crawl Resources links a number of these.

Who is Flint Fireforge? is about the author.

Back Page Piffle: Artifacts has ten magic items suitable for the hex crawl, or other things.

Crit Happens: Issue #4 Hex Crawl of Horror in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. The Contents covers the major sections and is hyperlinked. Navigation is adequate. The text maintains a single column format and some minor errors were noticed. There are some stock black and white illustrations. Presentation is okay.

This issue of the series is a selection of tools that can be useful for hex crawls, though any hex crawl based on them would need fleshing out a bit more to add some depth. It’s essentially the framework for a more detailed hex crawl. The best use would be using them as a framework, for much of what’s in the supplement is based on the briefly-detailed setting of the Terror-tories.
