Big Trouble Adventure 04 - Town by the Sea

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Big Trouble Adventure 04 – Town by the Sea

Big Trouble Adventure 04 – Town by the Sea by Brian Phongluangtham and Brandon Lillie is a role playing game supplement published by B Drone Games for use with Hero Kids and the Big Trouble setting. This is the first in the Lilliput Trilogy and continues where Big Trouble Adventure 03 – The Fate of Mammoth Park finished.

The supplement is available from DriveThruRPG for $2.99 although it was purchased at a reduced price during a sale. There are three PDFs in the supplement. The first two have 46 pages with one page being the front cover and one the front matter. These are the primary PDFs and one is a printer friendly version. The third PDF has 41 pages and contains maps for printing out.

Big Trouble Adventure 04 - Town by the SeaPrerequisite explains what is needed to play; the Big Trouble Setting Guide and Rules, hero and monster cards, minis, inventory and crafting cards, encounter maps, d6s, pencils and rubbers. The Background briefly describes what happened to start the first adventure and the Adventure Overview summarises the adventure.

First Time Adventurers Start Here! and The story thus far… are for players who haven’t used the setting before. The Crafting Attribute is explained and the events of Mammoth Park are summarised.

The adventure itself has seven different encounters. This is a pretty substantial adventure, and many of the encounters have different options depending on what the players decide to do and whether or not the characters fail skill tests. Failed tests don’t stop the adventure; they just mean a more difficult option must be taken. The adventure continues in Big Trouble Adventure 05 – Bigger Trouble, though Sandcastle Defence can be played in-between.

Following this are ten pages of maps, and these are done in an increased size in the separate PDF, a single page puzzle to print out, two pages with four new monsters, one page having colour, the other black and white, and two pages of minis for these monsters, again in colour and black and white.

Big Trouble Adventure 04 – Town by the Sea in Review

The PDF is well bookmarked with major and minor sections linked. Navigation is good. The text maintains a two-column landscape format and appeared to be free of errors. As well as the maps, and there are additional maps for one location, should the GM decide to expand things, there are a number of colour illustrations, all for the monsters and all custom, plus the puzzle and a black and white illustration that would have been nice to have as a handout. Presentation is very good.

The different locations make use of the crafting rules for this setting, and characters can search them for parts used in crafting. There are no alternate encounters, but many of the encounters can go in different ways, depending on actions and tests, meaning that adventure playthroughs may not work out the same. Though this adventure can be run without the previous trilogy, it will probably be more fun to get that trilogy first and run through everything in the setting. Big Trouble Adventure 04 – Town by the Sea is a nice adventure for Hero Kids and it can be found by clicking here.
