Big Trouble Adventure 03 - The Fate of Mammoth Park

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Big Trouble Adventure 03 – The Fate of Mammoth Park

Big Trouble Adventure 03 – The Fate of Mammoth Park by Brian Phongluangtham and Brandon Lillie is a role playing game supplement published by B Drone Games for use with Hero Kids and the Big Trouble setting. This is the third adventure in the Mammoth Park Trilogy and it continues where the previous one, Big Trouble Adventure 02 – Fall of the Underground City, left off.

The supplement is available from DriveThruRPG for $2.99 although it was purchased at a reduced price as part of a bundle. The supplement contains three PDFs. The first two have 52 pages, with one page being the front cover and one the front matter, and are the primary PDFs, one being a printer-friendly version. The third PDF has 46 pages and contains the battlemaps for printing out.

Big Trouble Adventure 03 - The Fate of Mammoth ParkPrerequisite explains what is needed to play; the Big Trouble Setting Guide and Rules, hero and monster cards, minis, inventory and crafting cards, encounter maps, d6s, pencils and rubbers. Background briefly recaps the events at the beginning of the Setting Guide. Adventure Overview does what it says.

First Time Adventurers Start Here! has some explanations as to what to do, primarily with the major NPC, who still has plot armour, for players who haven’t played through the previous two adventures. Crafting for Beginners also has some instructions for first time adventurers and The story thus far… recaps what has happened to date.

The adventure itself has nine different encounters, making this a pretty substantial adventure. The encounters have a variety of different challenges for heroes to face, and how they cope with the challenges affects how the encounters play out. Failures will make things turn out differently. The Epilogue then wraps up the Mammoth Park Trilogy; the heroes are still diminished in size, so more adventures can be had. They have a clue as to who could help them return to normal size, but that isn’t covered in this adventure. That is explored in the Lilliput Trilogy, starting with Big Trouble Adventure 04 – Town by the Sea.

Following this are a full-page map of the Hive, which is a maze that needs solving, ten battlemaps, one of them blank, one page with two handouts and four crafted item cards, four new monsters, in colour and black and white and miniatures for these, again in colour and black and white.

Big Trouble Adventure 03 – The Fate of Mammoth Park in Review

The PDF is well bookmarked with major and minor sections linked. Navigation is good. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. The illustrations are colour reproductions of monster images from either this or the Setting Guide or smaller versions of the battlemaps. Presentation is decent.

Again, this is one of the more complex Hero Kids adventures, with quite a lot of different encounters and situations. There’s a decent variety of challenges for heroes to face; the NPC’s plot armour is still a bit annoying, though. It did seem in the previous adventure that the heroes would end this one returned to their proper size. This doesn’t happen, though, which does leave openings for more adventures. Big Trouble Adventure 03 – The Fate of Mammoth Park is a decent conclusion to the trilogy and it can be found by clicking here.
