Bestiarum Vocabulum: Monstrous Plants

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Bestiarum Vocabulum: Monstrous Plants

Bestiarum Vocabulum: Monstrous Plants is role playing game supplement published by Skirmisher Publishing for use with Labyrinth Lord. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 22-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $2.99 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three the front matter, one the Open Game License and one is an ad.

Bestiarum Vocabulum explains that there aren’t many plant menaces for Labyrinth Lord, despite the plenitude of ideas for such, and that this supplement is divided into two sections, the first being monstrous plants able to attack by themselves and the second plants that are interesting for a number of reasons.

Bestiarum Vocabulum: Monstrous PlantsBirthing grass protects eggs it is placed on.

Bone vines can be killed by water and releases an aura of fire at any creature that needs water to survive that comes too close.

The chimera’s oak collects starlight and uses the energy as a beam weapon.

Fire stokers are covered in flames and live on magma and lava.

Flaming fountains incinerate everything around them.

Gear daisies are clockwork plants with thorn cannons and dangerous roots.

Grave roses can be used to communicate with the dead their roots touch.

Hangman’s ivy kills by constricting around the neck of its victims.

Shiver oak can trap prey in an extradimensional space.

Silver foils can dazzle creatures and even harm them with directed light.

Spatter vines are bloodsuckers.

Non-Monstrous Supernatural Plants is the second section and has 22 plants that, though as mentioned not monstrous, have a variety of interesting things and can still be dangerous.

Bestiarum Vocabulum: Monstrous Plants in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with the various sections linked. Navigation is decent. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be almost free of errors. There are a variety of colour illustrations, up to full page in size, though not one for every monster. Presentation is okay.

This supplement does what it sets out to do; adds a bunch of plant monsters to a Labyrinth Lord game, as well as some interesting plants that are not monsters. Both sections have a variety of different kinds of plants, with a different variety of features or ways of attacking people. Bestiarum Vocabulum: Monstrous Plants is a decent little bestiary and it can be found by clicking here.
