Batterbay: A Drop-In Settlement is a generic role playing game supplement written and published by Mad Mage Post.
The supplement is available as a 16 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. One page is the front cover, one an ad and one the License. There is also a zip file containing 16 hex map pngs.
Welcome to Batterbay explains that these zines are intended to create readymade settlements for a game with locations, NPCs, downtime activities and adventure hooks, and this one introduced Batterbay, known for a unique fish and a fantasy fryer. There are details on using this, having a quick start, what Batterbay is and why adventurers visit.
Batterbay has details on its three districts, general information, layout and feel and the eating contest, detailed more later.
Dock’s Corner covers the first district, with important locations listed, then an adventure hook, then the fish fryer covered in more detail with prices and an adventure hook.
Eating Contest has details on the contest and rules for running it.
Dock Corner Supporting Locations covers the other locations in less detail.
Flowden covers the second district, with the various important locations given an overview.
Hillgrow covers the final district with the locations and important NPCs.
Gossip, Rumors & Additional Hooks has d8 rumours and gossip and d6 threats.
Creatures of Batterbay has some details on a number of unique creatures.
Build Your Own World with Hexes explains the included zip is intended to help you build your own world out from Batterbay.
Batterbay: A Drop-In Settlement in Review
The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation is okay. The text is primarily single column format, though on occasion two-columns, and some minor errors were noticed. There are a variety of colour illustrations. Presentation is good.
Settlements that can be slotted into a setting are always useful, and the lack of stats isn’t really a problem in most cases. There are a variety of NPCs, locations and adventure hooks as well as other activities covered in a decent amount of detail. The flavour of Batterbay means it won’t fit in every setting, though; it’s on the lighter side, tone-wise, and it might struggle in even some high fantasy setting. One setting, admittedly one aimed at children, it would work with is the Brecken Vale. Batterbay: A Drop-In Settlement can be found by clicking here.
