Are My Wings Even?

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Are My Wings Even?

Are My Wings Even? by Sadia Bies is a role playing game published by Witchstitches.

The supplement is available as a five-page PDF from itch.io for $5 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. One page is the front cover.

Are My Wings Even?Even Faeries Were Young Once is essentially a bit of fluff about faeries and their childhoods when they lack true names.

Scenario explains that you are a young fae getting ready for your first excursion into the world of mortals, heading to a revel, where as you lack a name, you shouldn’t be going, but it’s known this is done by all fae. It’s also your first time doing a glamor, and you and your friends need to help each other prepare.

What You Need explains you need 2-4 people, 2 hours, a variety of makeup in as many types as possible, alternate clothes and music, preferably something from when you were younger.

Rules explains that fae must always tell the truth, whenever you want to say something to another faerie about how you feel about them, talk about the dance, only touch when it is coached as a platonic excuse and only stare when the other isn’t watching.

Gameplay is four stages; picking out the clothes, getting dressed, putting on each other’s makeup and choosing a name.

Making a Character has a series of questions.

Safety explains discussing beforehand what’s okay and what isn’t, especially as the game involves physical touching and discussing the others’ appearances. The game can be stopped at any time.

Inspiration explains that the game comes from the author’s experiences as a closeted teenager and getting dressed for dances with their friends.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is short enough that they aren’t needed. Navigation is okay. The text is essentially a single column format and appeared to be free of errors. Bar the cover, there are no illustrations. Presentation is okay.

This is an unusual type of role playing game – and it is a role playing game because it involves playing a role – and one that is definitely not suited to everyone. It’s mostly only going to be for those who are already reasonably comfortable around others and their feelings towards them, though it could well help the players realise things about their selves. At full price, though, it is rather expensive. Are My Wings Even? can be found by clicking here.
