Animals of the Frontiers of Space: Volume Two

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Animals of the Frontiers of Space: Volume Two

Animals of the Frontiers of Space: Volume Two by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with Cepheus Engine. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

Animals of the Frontiers of Space: Volume TwoThe supplement is available as a 43 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three the front matter and three the Open Game License.

The opening paragraphs explain that the Sonora sector is home to many species – the supplement is set in the Frontiers of Space – that cover a whole range of types, from benign to not and dangerous to not and that sometimes the difference between animal and alien species, plant or animal, can be hard to tell.

The Creatures takes up most of the supplement, and has details on them. Each is named, and some species come in sub-types, as well as described, number appearing and stats such as weight, damage inflicted and psionic abilities.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and has enough animals listed that these would have been useful. Navigation is poor. The text maintains a single column format and some minor errors were noticed. There are no illustrations bar the covers. Presentation is poor.

This is another collection of creatures suited for use with Cepheus Engine. They cover a range of different types, including some that are space dwelling, some thought to be unique and one sentient species that is thought to be extinct. Or at least hasn’t been encountered alive. These should be easy enough to drop into any setting and things like uniqueness and being extinct can be ignored or changed. Animals of the Frontiers of Space Volume Two is a useful supplement for adding more creatures to Cepheus Engine and it can be found by clicking here.
