And the Sun Shined Brightly by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with Cepheus Engine. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.
The supplement is available as an 18 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three the front matter and three the Open Game License.
The opening paragraphs explain that the sun of a system in the Sonora sector – though not stated, the adventure takes place in the Frontiers of Space setting – is reportedly about to go supernova shortly. A charitable group hires the characters to rescue as many people as they can before the sun explodes.
Patron gives details on the patron.
Complications lists various potential problems, mostly down to people being desperate and the sun about to explode.
Lasened IV gives details on the inhabited world.
Supernova has a table for determining when the supernova happens. Which includes as the characters arrive.
A Small Group of Violent People has stats for several people who plan to take a ship by force.
The Mob has details on a larger mob of 20 people desperate to get offworld.
Potential Passengers has 20 people who can pay to leave.
Player Tactics has how the characters might safely, in terms of dealing with people, land and rescue people.
Mission Completion explains that the mission is over when the characters stop returning for passengers, or the star explodes.
And the Sun Shined Brightly in Review
The PDF lacks bookmarks and has enough different sections that they would have been useful. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a single column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are no illustrations bar the covers. Presentation is adequate.
The adventure has some problems. Firstly, any system with a star about to go supernova is, to put it mildly, highly unlikely to have habitable worlds. The description given suggests that this is an ordinary star that is going to go supernova almost completely unexpectedly. In truth, an ordinary nova is far more likely. Also, a supernova would over several years make a mess of the surrounding systems. Finally, there’s a chance of a TPK being randomly rolled the second the characters enter the system. It’s highly recommended to make this a nova, not a supernova, and remove the TPK aspect. And the Sun Shined Brightly is not a great adventure, which essentially involves the players rolling the dice and hoping to make a pile of money, and it can be found by clicking here.
