An Accursed Trio

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement An Accursed Trio

An Accursed Trio by Robert J. Schwalb is a role playing game supplement published by Schwalb Entertainment for use with Shadow of the Demon Lord. This is part of the Vault of the Demon Lord series that introduces new relics.

The supplement is available as a seven-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $1.49 but was purchased at a reduced price during a sale. Half a page is the cover image and a quarter the Credits.

The opening paragraphs give a brief overview of the relics. The relics then follow. Each has their history given, followed by any game effects.

An Accursed TrioEndblade is a troll-forged blade used in their wars against the faeries. The wielder proved unstoppable until Thanatos himself slew them with an arrow; the location of the blade’s owner is known to the Father of Death at all times, which has disadvantages. The sword is believed to be in the hoard of the Great Dragon.

Fate Stealer is a dagger given to the last emperor by a devil. The dagger allowed fate to go in the emperor’s way, by taking it from another. When Fate Stealer vanished, the emperor was killed by the orcs days later.

Jester’s Cap is a cap made by the god Revel. Users can draw from the hat, and what is drawn is rolled on a 2d20 table; each number is used to determine the result. The final three and a half pages of the supplement are taken up by this very extensive table. The results have similarities to a wand of wonder and a deck of many things – but with some truly bad results. Yes; this item can actually cause more destruction than the notorious deck of many things.

An Accursed Trio in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and with only three sections doesn’t need them. Navigation is fine. The text maintains a two-column full colour format and appeared to be free of error. The single illustration is the front-page image, which appears to be custom. Presentation is okay; it would have been nice to have illustrations for each of the items.

This supplement is perhaps shorter than it might initially appear, given that the table for the Jester’s Cap takes up half of it. Getting the Endblade is potentially fatal, Fate Stealer has the potential for problems and the Jester’s Cap can actually bring the Demon Lord closer. Or have a second Shadow of the Demon Lord fall on Urth. Many of the results are minor but many are dangerous. Only groups that think the deck of many things are likely to enjoy this item. An Accursed Trio has three interesting new relics and it can be found by clicking here.
