Amil's Candle Shop

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Amil’s Candle Shop

Amil’s Candle Shop by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with OSRIC. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 17 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three the front matter and three the Open Game License.

Amil's Candle ShopThe opening paragraphs explain that fantasy cities are made up of different places and that having ones to drop in are useful.

Amil’s Candle Shop describes the location, first a general description including where it’s likely to be found, then the various places in it.

Amil and His Family describes the NPCs.

Customers of the Shop has 20 different customers to encounter and descriptions of what they are after.

Goods for Sale and Prices has descriptions of the general items and where they are sold, and where the special items are kept. There are prices for different types of candles, wicks, candle dishes, candle sticks and candle snuffers.

Special Items List has the special items, both candles and candle sticks, and their costs. The special candles are made from potentially dangerous or illegal ingredients. There are also details on the effects that the special candles have.

Potential Adventures has five different adventure hooks.

Rumors has ten rumours, both true and false.

Candles in the Fantasy Realm or in Medieval Times briefly looks at how candles were much more important in this period.

The final page of content has a map of the shop.

Amil’s Candle Shop in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a single column format and some minor errors were noticed. Bar the map and covers, there are no illustrations. Presentation is okay.

Shops are useful things to have on hand for fantasy cities, and describing all of them is difficult, so having ones that could be dropped in is useful. This shop is well detailed, with an assortment of adventure hooks, rumours, people to meet and things to buy. Some of the special items would be of interest to adventurers, which is how such could end up in the shop, and then they might get dragged into other things. Amil’s Candle Shop is a useful little supplement and it can be found by clicking here.
