Alcohol & Other Intoxicants is a role playing game supplement published by Skirmisher Publishing for use with d20/OGL games and the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game.
The supplement is available as a 12 page Pay What You want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three the front matter and one is an ad.
The supplement covers five different types of intoxicants. Each is laid out in a similar way, with the name, also known as, description, mechanics and treatment.
Alcohol is the first intoxicant and it’s known by too many other names to list. It includes a table on the effect of the number of drinks has on a person, as well as a sidebar on fetal alcohol syndrome.
Cocaine is the second, which is also known by too many names to list. This is a substance derived from the leaves of the coca plant and it can be taken in a number of ways, from drinking coca-leaf infused drinks, to chewing the leaves, to refined coca, which is the strongest.
Mushrooms (Psychedelic) are known by a few names and have a, naturally, psychedelic effect, which makes them vulnerable to illusion spells.
Opium (Recreational) has a few names and comes from the opium poppy. Recreational use is rare and it can be used as a painkiller.
Pipeweed is also known by too many names to list and this is a generic name for hundreds of different plants that are smoked.
Alcohol & Other Intoxicants in Review
The PDF is bookmarked with major sections linked. Navigation is decent. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a number of stock illustrations, up to full page in size. Presentation is okay.
This supplement contains rules on handling a number of intoxicating substances that could be used with a number of games, especially those that lack any official rules. They could also be used as a variant on official rules, given that they may be more detailed. The coverage of each type of intoxicant is pretty thorough. Alcohol & Other Intoxicants is a decent little supplement and it can be found by clicking here.
