A0 The Rising Knight – Adventures for 5th Edition Rules by Davis Chenault is a role playing game supplement published by Troll Lord Games for use with Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result. This is an adventure for first level characters and is also available in a version for Castles & Crusades.
The supplement is available as a 26-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $6.99 but was received for free thanks to a special offer. Two pages are the front and rear covers, one is the front matter, one the Open Game License and one an ad.
The Introduction explains that the people of the village of Malforten is suffering from the depredations of a gnoll warrior who has taken over an abandoned temple, and have called for help. There are details on the gnoll followed by ways of involving the characters. This is followed by a map of the region; other adventures in the A series take place in the general area, with Assault on Blacktooth Ridge being overtly mentioned.
First up is travelling to Malforten, with a d20 encounter chart. Malforten itself is given an overview, with a d12 table of rumours followed by NPC descriptions and places of interest. More areas of interest in the surrounding wilderness are described, with more encounter tables for different areas. Finally, the ruined temple is covered.
After this there are suggestions of more adventures for the area, names that can be used for NPCs and Conversion Notes for converting Castles & Crusades to 5th Edition, though it’s stated this has been done in this adventure.
A0 The Rising Knight – Adventures for 5th Edition Rules in Review
The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation is poor. The text maintains a two-column format and some errors were noticed. Some of these appeared to be setting-related. The adventure is set in Aihrde and there’s reference to a king of New Aenochre. However, in the Codex of Aihrde, there’s an empress of New Aenoch. This looks like a mistake. Apart from the maps of the area and the temple, there are some black and white illustrations, some of which may be custom. Presentation is okay.
Though the adventure is set in Aihrde, it should be comparatively easy to drop it in a wilderness area in most settings. It’s also a bit of a sandbox location; though there is a definite final destination to visit, characters can wander around the landscape as well with other locations to visit. The adventure may have been converted to 5th Edition, but it looks like this just involved changing the stats. This is all that is truly needed, but the style doesn’t feel like a 5th Edition adventure. A0 The Rising Knight – Adventures for 5th Edition Rules is a decent enough starting adventure and it can be found by clicking here.
