A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement #30 Not so Mundane Items

#30 Not so Mundane Items by David Mallon is a role playing game supplement published by Rite Publishing, part of their ’30’ series. This supplement is for the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game; as a result it is covered by the Open Game License and some of it is considered to be Open Game Content.

This is an eleven page bookmarked PDF. The supplement is available from RPGNow at the regular price but was purchased at the reduced price of $2.07. One page of the supplement is the front cover, one page the front matter, one page the Open Game License and two pages are ads for other products, leaving six pages of actual content.

This is a collection of 30 different items, each apparently mundane in appearance, yet each of which is actually a wondrous item. Each of these has a standard format and the supplement concludes with a table of items ordered by gp cost. These range from a mere 150 gp up to a massive 197,500 gp.

The items are such as torches, bells, flasks, brooms, bowls and bells to name a few, yet each has more power than their simple appearance might suggest.

#30 Not so Mundane Items in Review

The supplement is well bookmarked for its length. Each individual item isn’t bookmarked; instead various sections are as well as alphabetical categories. Bookmarks aren’t really needed so this is a plus. The text maintains a two column format and no errors were noticed. There are a few appropriate stock black and white illustrations used; a compass for the Dungeoneer’s Compass for example.

The items are an interesting collection – no standard weapons and armour here – and may be truly considered wondrous, despite their mundane appearance. The vast majority are not simply basic enhancers or spells in a magic item, but are actually quite interesting. They may or may not be useful – the bottomless inkwell which can create 1,000 cubic feet of ink might have limited use, but then again, creative adventurers might come up with a use for it; the case of infinite scrolls which will take 100 magical and non-magical scrolls has a more definite use – but they do add more than a little flavour than the bog standard sword +1.
